Did you know that keeping track of your AC’s age is recommended for homeowners to know? Knowing the exact age of your home’s cooling system offers valuable insight and enables you to plan as needed. We know this may seem like a minuscule detail to keep track of, but air conditioners generally last a solid 15 to 20 years – and that’s with proper maintenance. So, being informed about your unit’s age ensures you’re ready for any surprises if your AC decides to take a break after all these years. After all, no one likes unexpected hiccups, right?
If you’ve misplaced your AC’s paperwork and are unsure how to determine its exact age, don’t worry. Our team at Upper Arlington Heating & Air is here to guide you with these simple steps:
Check the Condenser
First and foremost, let’s check the unit itself. So, you’ll need to venture outside to locate your outdoor unit, also known as the condenser. This is the large metal box located in your backyard or by the side of your house. Once you have located the unit, scan the sides of it. There should be a nameplate containing all the essential info about your cooling system. Next, scan the upper right corner and the top of the nameplate for the manufacture date. This will usually be marked as MFR DATE or something similar. Wording may vary from unit to unit. After finding the manufacture date, you should know how old your air conditioner is. But if, for some reason, you have had trouble locating the necessary information, don’t throw in the towel just yet. Proceed to the next step below.
Check Online
We aren’t giving up just yet! Still, no luck finding the manufacture date? No problem! Let’s channel your inner detective and jot down the model, brand, and serial number from the nameplate or take a quick picture with your phone for convenience. Then, use your favorite online search engine and add “manufacture date” to the end of the search. Click search, and you should find various websites offering specific instructions to decode your AC model’s manufacture date. Bravo, well done! Research and persistence pay off as you have now unveiled your air conditioner’s age.
