In any case, there are a variety of ways in which a home heating system could breakdown, and a variety of measures that can prevent this from happening.
Most failures can be avoided by knowing about what the most likely causes of failure are and taking steps to prevent any problems.
Have a look at the following if you’re having issues.
Lack of maintenance
We say this often, and yet all too-often we’re called out to a customer’s home because they’re having furnace issues after neglecting maintenance in the fall. If you’re looking to make your furnace perform efficiently and take care of the system so it lasts a long time, the nominal cost of maintenance is nothing compared to that of a breakdown. With preventative maintenance, our HVAC technicians can find problems before they develop into disasters!
Thermostat problems
Thermostats can break or become decalibrated over time, which and end up causing your heating system to not trigger or to trigger too often. Although it’s not a problem with the furnace, it feels like furnace failure when your home doesn’t have the heat you need for comfort.
Keep in mind, if your thermostat is older, we sell smart thermostats and wi-fi thermostats that pay for themselves in no time!
Dirty or clogged filters
Air filters are dirt and dust magnets. Literally. That’s what they’re meant to do — collect dirt over time. Nevertheless, this also means they do wear out over time. And they need checked frequently during home heating season. When the air filter is clogged, it causes your furnace to have to work extra hard to heat your home to the same desired temperature. This extra stress and strain is not necessary. It can lead to your furnace breakdown in a hurry. Knowing this, you should replace your air filters frequently so your system runs smoothly and effectively.
Electrical ignition, pilot light issues
The pilot light/igniter is an essential component of any home heating system. It’s responsible for the flames, for the lighting of the actual fuel that heats your home. If this component does not work, the fuel won’t ignite and it’ll be all bad. You’ll realize as much as you’ll be left cold. Understanding this, there is a way to check if your pilot light is operational. In any case, it’s good practice to have it checked out at least annually as part of maintenance because the flame should be blue and not yellow and it should not be flickering. Dealing with gas and the potential for carbon monoxide and any number of other things that could go wrong, it’s better to play it safe than to be sorry.
The blower motor failure
The blower motor is essentially what keeps the air moving around your home. Should this component fail it doesn’t matter how efficient your furnace is, the hot air won’t be distributed around your home. The blower can fail from over usage or from it becoming clogged. Have your ducts cleaned and your furnace tuned-up to keep the blower working effectively.
Fuel supply problems
Most furnaces are fueled by natural gas or powered by electricity. The most common reason for failure with an electrical furnace is poor wiring. Poor wiring can cause a short and blow a breaker. To make sure your furnace is wired up correctly, ask a heating technician to check it during a regular maintenance appointment or furnace tune up. Natural gas furnace problems need to be taken seriously. If you notice that there is an issue with your gas line or the fuel going to your furnace, call us immediately. Natural gas is dangerous and toxic.
In any case, the majority of furnace issues can be avoided with regular care and maintenance. Be sure to have your furnace tuned-up annually to avoid any potential issues.
