Don’t freak out if you notice that your furnace is only blowing cool air. If this happens, it’s most likely because your pilot light is out, but there’s no need to worry. Your professionals at Upper Arlington Heating & Air have put together a step-by-step guide so that you can easily relight the pilot light yourself. Just be careful to follow the steps precisely in order to avoid any safety hazards.
Please note that usually, manufacturers place pilot relighting instructions on the side of each furnace. Nevertheless, it’s not unusual for this label to be challenging to read if for example your unit is in a tight location or has insufficient lighting in the area. Subsequently, we always emphasize the importance of following the manufacturer’s directions when possible. However, if you are unable to do so, read further below for some general tips:
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO RELIGHTING A FURNACE PILOT LIGHT?
1. First, find the pilot light on your furnace. You may need to remove the burner cover first. Once you’ve found it, turn the gas valve to the “off” position. This is a safety precaution because it will cut off the flow of gas to the pilot light. Gas can build up in furnaces and cause harm to you and your home, so this precaution is absolutely essential.
2. Next, turn off your furnace. Usually, the power button is located at the base.
3. Please, wait a few minutes for the gas to disperse before continuing. Do not bypass this step as it is crucial for safety reasons. There could be a risk of fire or explosion if you try to relight the pilot light without waiting long enough for the gas to evaporate. As indicated by experts, it is best practice to wait at least five minutes before proceeding.
4. After five minutes have elapsed, you can place a lighter or long match near the pilot light opening and turn the pilot assembly to the “pilot” setting. This will allow gas to enter the pilot light. Then press and hold down the “reset” switch. With the “reset” switch held down, slowly bring the ignited lighter or match close until it ignites the pilot light. Just be cautious. Once you see the pilot flame has sparked, you may release your hold on the “reset” switch.
5. Remember to turn your gas supply back on!
6. If you have a burner cover, make sure to return it back to its original position, and then give your furnace some time to heat up again. Before you know it, your home will be warm and cozy!
If the pilot light still does not stay lit, you might have a system-related issue. In that case, contacting an HVAC professional would be the best solution. They will know how to safely and effectively assess the problem and replace any components as necessary.
