With Thanksgiving here again, and the holiday season in full swing, it’s important we count our blessings and show gratitude for some of the things we might take for granted.
Even though 2020 was a crazy year for so many of us, the saying goes: Things could always be worse. Because of this, it’s important to focus on the good things in our lives, such as our health, well-being, families, friends, safety, and the heat provided to us in our homes by our furnaces and home heating systems.
When the weather outside is extreme, our home heating systems endlessly strive to keep us safe and comfortable.
In today’s article, in honor of Thanksgiving, we at Upper Arlington Heating & Cooling discuss some of the things our HVAC systems do for us year-round, along with some of the things we can do to show our appreciation.
Why we should be grateful for our HVAC systems
Comfortable
Whether it’s hot or cold weather we are facing, our HVAC systems are the reason our homes keep us so comfortable — whatever the time of year. And despite this, too many people don’t give these systems a whole lot of thought, let alone giving thanks, until they lose service, whether it’s from a loss of power or a mechanical breakdown. When this happens, after service and comfort is restored, it reframes our perspectives. When we lose our comfort and get it back, it brings about a new appreciation.
Clean Air to Breathe
Another function our home heating and cooling systems are responsible for is helping keep the indoor air we breathe clean, which serves a crucial role in our overall well-being and health. This is made possible by the air filters in our furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioning units. Our HVAC air filters are meant to remove dust, dirt, pet dander and other airborne pollutants from our home’s supply of air. Most of these airborne particles can cause allergies and breathing problems. For those homeowners wanting to take this a step further and improve breathing conditions even more, we have a whole line of Indoor Air Quality products.
Efficiency
In this business, it’s a well-known fact that when we take care of our HVAC systems, they take care of us. When it comes to optimal efficiency, this care saves us a lot of money on heating and cooling costs. Today’s newer modern systems, in fact, come with Energy Star Labels. Energy Star is great. However even with this label, you cannot afford to go without regular seasonal maintenance. Preventative maintenance, or tune-ups, are a must for all HVAC systems.
How We Can Show Our Appreciation
Because our home heating and cooling systems are expensive, intricate machines, it pays to show them our appreciation. Having said that, we are aware, HVAC systems aren’t self-aware; they can’t think and it’d be pointless to tell them “Thank You.” However, they respond nicely when we give them a little care. Showing your appreciation for these major home investments will pay off. The first step in doing this begins with keeping up with preventative maintenance, also known as tune-ups, and keeping your air filters fresh to allow for free airflow. Other ways to give thanks for your furnace or AC include:
- Changing air filters often
- Keeping the outside unit clean
- Having your vents and air ducts cleaned
- Keeping an eye out for leaks in loose ductwork
- Keeping a clear and open space of three feet around systems
- Making sure you seal drafts and air leaks in the home
- Understanding energy efficiency in your home
- Making sure you have enough attic insulation
- Installing a smart thermostat
- Keeping your home clean
- Practice safety always!
